Abstract

836,126. Indicating devices for vehicles. SANDALL, E. J. July 1, 1957 [July 6, 1956; Sept. 8, 1956], Nos. 20943/56 and 27537/56. Class 79(5) A motor vehicle impact absorbing and warning means consists of a pad c, Fig. 1, secured to a bumper bar a and adapted to give on impact at any point throughout its length so as to close electrical contacts e, e<SP>1</SP>, the pad regaining its expanded state on removal of impact pressure. The con- . tacts e, e<SP>1</SP> are in the form of strips or spots extending throughout the length of the pad. Excessive impact pressure is aocommodated by a hollow part b provided with a relief valve g and an air inlet valve f. The parts b and c may be of rubber and the opening of the contacts e, e' may be spring assisted. Fig. 2 shows an alternative construction in which spaced members h carrying spring-loaded contacts e and co-operate with springs and contacts e<SP>1</SP> in housings o secured to the bumper bar a. On impact, a spring-loaded rail l secured by pins k to the members h moves inwardly in relation to the pad b and causes the contacts e, e<SP>1</SP> to close while continued impact pressure will cause the pad b to yield. The pad b may be re-expanded by increased air pressure or by springs while the pins k may bear directly on or be secured to the springs j. The rail l may be omitted and the members h extended to operate electric contacts within the bumper bar a itself. In a further construction, the pad is divided by a vertical partion having the space in front of it filled with air or liquid and connected by a pipe to plunger-operated contacts. In other constructions, springs may be interposed between the pad and the bumper bar, the pad may be hingedly or slidably associated with the bumper bar and follow the shape of the latter or be built up only at selected parts and, when it is of transparent or translucent material, be internally illuminated. The pads may be fitted at front, rear and sides of the vehicle and be provided with renewable rollers or studs to reduce friction.
