[Also in Group XXXI] Means for assisting manoeuvring of a vehicle comprises one or more probes stowed transversely across the front (or rear) of the vehicle and movable under control of the driver into an extended position in which at least a part of the probe or probes is spaced from the vehicle, and means operated upon contact of an extended probe with an object to give an indication to the driver. A probe 1, shaped in conformity to the bumper of a car or like vehicle, is mounted on two arms 3 and is normally held by springs 7 in a position adjacent the bumper. Upon the closure of a switch 6 by the driver, solenoids 4 cause the arms 3 to move the probe 1 away from the bumper 2. If the probe now strikes an obstacle, it moves inwards and closes a micro-switch 8, or connects contacts 11/12 (Fig. 2, not shown), to give a visual or audible warning. The operating mechanism for the probe may be housed in over-riders or in casings secured to the bumper. In a further embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) two probes are each spring-biased to lie along the outer portions of a bumper and operation of solenoids 15 pivots the probes to an extended position. The solenoids may be arranged to both extend and retract the probe(s), which may also be actuated by any suitable electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic means.
