Class 120(2) Apparatus for regulating the thread tension in packages with conical layers of thread comprises a thread brake having a stronger braking action when thread is being wound at the tip of the cone than when it is being wound at the base of the cone, the brake being mounted between a thread traverse guide and the bobbin. As shown, the brake comprises arms 3, 4 preferably of transparent material, obliquely disposed so that when winding at the base of the cone the thread does not touch the arms, but is deflected when winding at the tip of the cone. The brake may be attached to the outer race of the bearing of a traverse drum and may be rotatably adjustable thereon.
