832,039. Discharging liquids by gaseous pressure. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V., DE. Jan. 28, 1958 [Jan. 30, 1957], No. 2823/58. Class 102(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A safety device for liquid storage tanks comprises a conduit 1 provided with two pressure relief valves 4, 5, and a vacuum relief valve 7, the valve 4 being set to relieve at a higher pressure than the valve 5. The conduit is provided with a flange 2 for securing it to the tank. The other end of the conduit is provided with a screw-threaded portion 36 for connecting a compressed air supply thereto. The valves may be spring biassed as shown or may be biassed by weights. Under normal conditions the tank internal pressure is regulated by the pressure relief valve 5 and the vacuum relief valve 7. If, however, it is desired to empty the tank using compressed air, a compressed air supply is attatched at 36. The compressed air is sensed on the upper surface of valve 5 by means of the passage 35 and the valve is rendered inoperative. Compressed air also flows through the valve 7 via the passage 32 and into the tank, the valve 7 acting as a check valve. The maximum tank pressure is then governed by the valve 4.
