Abstract

1,094,021. Cleaning engine sumps. H.M. POSTMASTER GENERAL. March 1, 1966 [March 4, 1965], No. 9267/65. Heading A4T. Apparatus for evacuating liquid, especially oil, from a sump 1 comprises a reservoir 10 with means 20-24 for making a fluid tight connection with the bottom 3 of the sump and means for creating a subatmospheric pressure in the reservoir 10 to draw the contents of the sump into the reservoir. As shown, the reservoir 10 is connected to the constricted portion of a venturi 25 through which air is passed from a compresser 28 and control valve 27 to atmosphere thereby to create a pressure reduction in the reservoir. A bottom outlet 12 in the reservoir 10 is normally closed by a spring biased valve 14, 15 and by the reduced pressure in the reservoir 10. When the oil transfer to the reservoir 10 is completed, the pressure returns to atmosphere and the valve 14 opens under the weight of oil in the reservoir 10 so that the oil is transferred to a secondary reservoir 11. In another embodiment (Fig. 2), a flow control valve (43) disposed in the outlet from the venturi 25 may be closed after transfer of oil "from .the sump to the primary reservoir (30) so that air from the compresser 28 is directed into the reservoir (30) to force the oil through a spring loaded primary reservoir outlet valve (34, 35) and into a remote secondary reservoir (31). The oil inlet to the primary reservoir (30) is fitted with a non-return valve (40) which closes when the reservoir (39) is pressurized.
