Class 120(2) Thread unwinding apparatus for withdrawing thread endwise from a cop includes a balloon preventing member which projects into the region where the balloon would form and is provided with an edge or surface facing the approaching thread, and extending radially of the cop axis or with a large radially extending component of direction. Alternatively a jet of air may be caused to impinge on the thread to prevent ballooning.
