Abstract

Wood pulp is prepared by partially leaching wood with a lye containing sodium sulphite, an alkaline hydrosulphite, preferably sodium hydrosulphite, and oxalate ions and thereafter grinding the leached material. The oxalate ions may be provided by addition to the lye of sodium oxalate or oxalic acid. The wood may first be impregnated with a lye of such concentration that the reagents retained within the wood are sufficient for at least partial leaching, and thereafter leaching may be effected by use of a lye substantially more dilute than the lye for the impregnating step, e.g. a lye 3-6 times more dilute or a lye containing only sodium sulphite. The liquor from a preceding operation may also be used for leaching. The initial pH of the lye may be adjusted, e.g. by adding sodium carbonate so that, after the leaching step, the pH is between 5-7. The impregnated wood may also be leached by the use of steam in the absence of liquid. Examples are given.
