Abstract

1432245 Pulping wood WESTVACO CORP 25 April 1973 [1 May 1972] 19623/73 Heading D2W A process for making wood pulp comprises cooking comminuted wood with an aqueous solution containing from 50 to 150 g/1 total alkali, measured as sodium oxide, wherein 50-100% by wt. of the total alkali, measured as sodium oxide, is sodium carbonate, the solution being added in a weight ratio wherein the total of titratable sodium, expressed as sodium oxide, is from 4-10% by wt. of the oven dried wood weight but not more than 2.4% by wt. on an oven dried wood basis is sodium sulfide, measured as sodium sulfide, under pressure for a time sufficient to solubilise not more than 30% by wt. of the organic compounds in the wood, and mechanically defibrating the cooked comminuted wood. The spent liquors from the process may be combined with the spent liquors from a kraft pulping process, the combined liquors being treated in a conventional manner for recovery of cooking chemicals for reuse.
