Abstract

Siloxanes are made by subjecting alkoxy or aryloxy polysilanes to a structural rearrangement by the application of heat. The polysilanes may be subjected to heat in the solid form or in the presence of solvents or diluents. The alkoxy or aryloxy polysilanes may be made by reacting (SiBr1)x with anhydrous alcohols or phenols or by reacting (RO)2SiBr2 with Mg. In examples: (1) absolute ethanol was reacted with (SiBr2)x, and after evolution of HBr had ceased the mixture was refluxed and the solvent subsequently removed by vacuum distillation; the resulting yellow oil (Si(OC2H5)2]x, was maintained at 200 DEG C. under vacuum to yield an insoluble, glassy product (SiBr2)x was similarly reacted with (2) benzyl alcohol, (3) methanol, and (4) phenol.
