Abstract

827,348. X-ray tubes. MACHLETT LABORATORIES Inc. March 6, 1958, No. 7286/58. Class 39(1). The anode of an X-ray tube is wholly within the envelope, and the target portion is enclosed by a hood extending in the direction of the cathode ; cooling liquid is circulated through channels in the main anode body portion adjacent the target surface, the said channels also extending into the hood. As shown in Fig. 2, the target 23 is embedded in a recessed portion 22 of the copper block forming the general anode structure, the hood part acting as a shield against secondary emission and unwanted radiation. The anode is supported by a sleeve 21 from a reentrant part of the glass envelope. The cooling liquid (oil or water) is introduced through a central pipe 28 into a conical chamber 33, from which it passes through a series of jets 34 to impinge on the walls of the passageways 35 just behind the target. -In a further provision for cooling the hood part itself, the liquid passes through a series of openings 40 into a channel 37 running down one side of the shield, through an annular passage connecting with a similar channel on the other side of the shield. The liquid outflow is deflected by a mounting ring 41 through parts 42 in a sleeve member 31, and flows out through a pipe 44 which is concentric with the inlet pipe 28. Resilient ring seals may be provided between the sleeve members 43 and 31.
