Abstract
1357469 Velocity-modulated tubes SIEMENS AG 7 Dec 1972 [2 March 1972] 56590/72 Heading H1D An electron gun for a transit-time tube, operable at two different power levels, includes a control grid which is spaced from the cathode and includes a portion which surrounds a central portion of the emissive area of the cathode and is such that the emission from the cathode area surrounding the central portion can be controlled independently of the emission from the central portion. As shown, the outer portion of the cathode emissive surface is covered by the annular grid 18, and the inner portion 19 projects forward flush with the grid surface, an annular shadow grid 20, with apertures aligned with those of the control grid, between interposed between the control grid and the cathode. The focusing anode 30 draws a current I 1 or I 2 according to whether the control grid is negative or positive, respectively. In further embodiments (Figs. 1 to 3, and 6 to 9, not shown), which avoid the stepping forward of the central cathode portion 19, the latter is covered by an inner portion of control grid electrically insulated from the annular portion; in this case, a common shadow grid for the two grid portions may be employed (Figs. 6 to 9), and the grid portions are supported by separate metal plates 8 extending through the envelope wall and separated by ceramic envelope portions 9. The cathode includes radiation shields 6.
