Abstract

826,497. Rectifying; transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 11, 1956], No. 31064/56. Class 38 (2). A D.C. traction motor 10 is energized from a transformer 6 through mercury arc converters 9a-9h having anodes connected to different tappings on the transformer secondary winding 7 and cathode connected to one terminal of the motor armature, the other terminal being connected to the central point of winding 7. The converters which may be of the kind described in Specification 817,504, [Group XL (a)] are controlled by exciting electrodes which may be rendered positive from rectifier 19 upon closure of switches 17. Two switches 17 associated with converters spaced equally from the centre tap are normally closed so that the motor receives fully rectified current. To vary the motor voltage, switches 17 of two converters next to the two conducting converters are closed to render them conducting, and the switches 17 of the conducting converters are opened to render them now conducting. All the excitation circuits are opened on overload by relay 20. The motor 10 has two field windings 14, 15 and a filter circuit comprising inductor 12 and capacitor 13. In another arrangement, two pairs of exciter controlled converters acting as diverter switches are connected to the transformer tappings through selector switches. Pairs of converters normally conduct in parallel, but to change the motor voltage first one and then the other converter of a pair is connected to the next tap. Their conductivity is appropriately controlled by switches in the exciter circuits which operate with the selector switches. Load shaping is assisted by chokes (Fig. 3, not shown). In a modification the respective converters of a pair are connected to one of two tapped secondary windings (Fig. 2, not shown). The rectifiers may be arranged as a bridge. Specifications 817,301 and 817,505, [both in Group XL (a)], also are referred to.
