Abstract
In a method of producing a bent or shaped transparent plastic sheet provided with a transparent electrically conductive film, the said film is deposited on a surface of the sheet while the sheet is flat, and the coated sheet is then bent or shaped to the desired curvature so that the film is not placed in tension. The sheet may by of diallyl diglycol carbonate polymer, methyl-a-chloracrylate polymer, methyl methacrylate, or polystyrene, and the electrically conductive film may be composed of the following layers deposited in sequence:-(i) a sealing layer, e.g. of quartz, titanium dioxide, aluminium oxide or chromium oxide, to prevent plasticizer emerging from the plastic, (ii) a metal oxide adhesive layer, (iii) a layer of electroconductive metal such as gold, nickel, iron, silver or copper (iv) a second adhesive layer, and (v) a protective layer such as quartz, aluminium oxide or magnesium fluoride. The layers may be deposited by direct thermal evaporation, thermal evaporation followed by an oxidation step, or cathode sputtering in a residual vacuum. Electrodes may be attached to the film for the purpose of supplying heating current when the sheet is used as an aircraft or ship window. In several embodiments, (i) a plastic sheet is coated and then bent so that the film is in compression, (ii) a sheet is heated so that it expands, is then coated, allowed to cool and contract, and then bent so that no forces operate on the film (iii) a coated bent sheet is laminated with another sheet with or without the interposition of a polyvinyl butyral bonding material, and (iv) a coated sheet is laminated with another sheet and the composite article then bent.
