Abstract

A channel shaped electrical connector 4, for a tape cable having conductors 2 embedded in insulating material 3 e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, comprises a base 7, from which a pair of integral lances 12, 13 extend into the channel, and a pair of sidewalls 8 having bevelled longitudinal edges 9 to provide sharp edges 10, the connector being pressed through the cable and crimped on the undersurface of the cable so that the edges 10 penetrate the bottom part of the insulation 3 to make contact with conductor 2 and the lances 12, 13 penetrate the upper portion of the insulation and make contact with the portions 19, 20 of the conductor. When the conductor is wider than the connector the edges of the conductor are curled and make contact with the sidewalls 8 of the connector. The lances 12, 13 are struck from the base 7 forming holes 14, and indentations 15 are formed adjacent each hole so that material from the central region 16 spreads into the holes 14 to provide stops 17 which prevent the lances returning into the plane of the base. The ends of the sidewalls 8 are tapered at 11 to help curling of the sidewalls during crimping. In another embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the sidewalls are formed with notches to provide relief for the insulating material entrapped in the connector during the crimping process.
