Abstract
819,725. Knitted fabrics. GROVE SILK CO. Nov. 16, 1955 [Feb. 10, 1955], No. 32740/55. Addition to 781,030. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] A stretchable knitted fabric is produced by forming successive bands (e.g. knitted courses or groups thereof) from three dead yarns of which two are of microcrystalline polymer material and have a potential ability to twist in opposite directions to each other, which ability is activated, after fabric formation, by a set-releasing, treatment. The third yarn, which has no potential twist, may also be a polymer yarn and be set by the said treatment; or it may be silk. The first two yarns may be polyamide or polyester monofil yarns A, B, previously set by heat treatment, twisted in opposite directions, treated by moist heat at a lower temperature than that of the original setting, and untwisted to such an extent, less than the original twisting as will render them dead; and they and a third unset, untwisted polymer yarn C may be knitted in successive courses, the resultant fabric being treated with, say, steam, boiling water, or hot dye. A pair of yarn ends A may, after twist-setting, be plied together, with a twist of opposite hand to that imparted to each end, to the dead condition, and the same treatment applied to a pair of ends B. An additional heavier splicing yarn, e.g. of silk, cotton, wool, or untreated nylon, having no potential liveliness, may be supplied from a fourth feeder for the reinforced parts of a stocking. Multifilament yarns may be used.
