Pipes 10, 11 are provided with collars 12, 13 respectively, secured as by grub screws or by expanding the pipes, and annular cone-like members 17, 18 positioned one on each pipe enclose a rubber washer 16 placed between the collars, means being provided for forcing the members 17, 18 together to compress the washer while restraining it from radial outward movement, and to draw the pipes into close abutting contact with one another. As shown in Fig. 1, the inner sides of the collars 12, 13 are inclined to provide a dovetailed space into which the washer is squeezed, the washer being of T- section and having a base wider than the inner width of the space when the pipes are butted together, the member 18 has a stepped bore 19 to allow overlap with the member 17, and the members 17, 18 are forced together by tightening bolts 23 passing through flanged members 21, 22 fitted loosely on the pipes. The members 21, 22 may be dispensed with, flanges being provided on the cone-like members to receive bolts, or, as shown in Fig. 3, the member 22 is dispensed with, and a ring 30 mounted on the pipe 10 fits over the back of the member 17 and has slotted lugs 32 to receive screw-threaded rods 35 hinged to lugs 34 on the member 18, the members 17, 18 being drawn together by tightening nuts 37. The clamping means may also take the form of toggles, compression springs may be used to force the members 17, 18 together, or these members may have inter-engaging screw threads.
