818,943. Agglutinated fibrous fabrics. CHICOPEE MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Aug. 9, 1955 [Aug. 9, 1954; Oct. 20, 1954 (4); Nov. 15, 1954], No. 22971/55. Class 140. A non-woven fabric, suitable for lining or stiffening garments or as a filter material, comprises a web of fibres impregnated substantially uniformly with (1) between 5 per cent and 40 per cent by weight of the dry web of a thermosetting melamine formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde or dicyandiamide - formaldehyde creaseproofing resin and (2) a binder material consisting of a soft acrylate polymer or co-polymer, the acrylate being a lower alkyl ester of acrylic acid wherein the alkyl radical contains up to and including 8 carbon atoms, the combined weight of the resin and the binder being between 25 per cent and 75 per cent of the weight of the fabric. Specified fibres are wool, nylon, polyester, viscose rayon and cotton. Specified acrylates are ethyl, butyl and octyl acrylates methyl and butyl methacrylates. Specified acrylate copolymers are those of ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile as ethyl acrylate and polyvinyl chloride. Suitable webs may be made by cording, gametting or air deposition. The web may be isotropic or its fibres may be oriented predominantly in one direction. The web may be impregnated in one step with a mixture of the binder and the resin after which the web is dried and the resin cured by heat in presence of a catalyst. The resin may be added to the mixture as a monomer and converted to a polymer during the curing step. A suitable catalyst is diammonium phosphate. Alternatively the web may be impregnated in two steps, first with the resin and then with the binder. The resin may be in the form of an emulsion containing a catalyst and may be heat-cured before application of the binder. The binder in turn may be heat cured in situ in presence of a curing agent such as zinc oxide. Dyes may be incorporated in the liquid impregnant.
