Abstract

1,128,659. Evaporators; liquid flows through externally-heated coil. A. WINKLER [trading as GWIELONG & WINKLER]. 20 Oct., 1965 [20 Oct., 1964; 21 Aug., 1965], No. 44397/65. Heading B1B. Liquid containing liquid or solid components to be separated therefrom by evaporation of the liquid passes under pressure through a conically coiled pipe 1 and is heated by gas flowing countercurrently through the space within a sleeve 2 containing the coil, the Vapour formed together with the separated components and any unevaporated liquid flows through pipe outlet 8 into a combustion chamber 6 where the vapour rides through outlet 9 and the separated components and remaining liquid are removed through outlet 11. A flame tube 4 heats the gas flowing through sleeve 5 to the space surrounding the coil, the tube also heating the chamber to lessen condensation. Any condensate formed may be collected between a funnel placed within the chamber base and the chamber wall (Fig. 2 not shown). The vapours pass to a heat exchanger 18 (Fig. 3 not shown) to preheat the liquid, the condensate formed being drawn off. In the case of sea water being evaporated this condensate is fresh water, and the sea water passes to a vacuum evaporator 36 (Fig. 4 not shown) for partial evaporation before being fed to the coiled pipe. The vapours may be utilised to drive a motor 29.
