In the initial stages of a steam turbine comprising two impulse stages 6, 7, 8, 9 in which the nozzles 8 are formed in diaphragm 20 which has a labyrinth seal 21 between itself and the turbine rotor shaft, the heat drop across the nozzles 6 is 1.5 to 3.0 times the heat drop across the nozzles 8, the steam velocity at the outlet of the nozzles does not exceed the sonic velocity and the direction of the steam flow out of the first stage moving blades into the second stage nozzles is not in line with the centre line of the rotor shaft.
