Abstract
816,566. Slings for lifting stacks of timber. QUIGGIN & CO. Ltd. Oct. 8, 1957 [Oct. 9, 1956], No. 30699/56. Class 78 (4). A sling for lifting a stack of timber includes a number of pairs of upper and lower joists I, L drawn together by chains or cables F running from an anchorage H on each end of the upper joist I, under a snatch block G on the lower joist L, and through a guide or slot on the upper joist to a yoke C, one yoke being provided for each pair of joists. The construction illustrated employs two pairs of joists and the snatch blocks G are connected to the lower joists L by hooks N and eyes M so that the lower joists may be redisposed to lie at right angles to the upper joists I when the sling is being lowered over a stack. In this condition each cable F is prevented from running through a slot J in the corresponding end of the beam I by engagement of a bolt K with a stop O clamped on the cable F in such a way that it is shifted, to allow the sling to clamp the load, as soon as the sling is lifted with the load resting on the lower joists L. The yokes C are joined by a box section member A to which is welded a tongue B for engagement by the hook of a crane. The joists I, L may be faced by friction material R or, where they are of channel section, they may, according to the Provisional Specification, be filled with a rectangular wooden bar standing proud of the flanges.
