Increase in internal gas pressure in a gas-tight cell during charging is minimised by introducing oxygen into the cell container prior to sealing so that the partial pressure of oxygen above the electrolyte is substantially equal to the total gas pressure within the sealed cell. The oxygen may be at sub-atmospheric pressure and may be introduced into the cell through a tube extending below the surface of the electrolyte so that oxygen is absorbed in the electrolyte. The negative electrode preferably has a greater capacity than the positive electrode and the invention is stated to be applicable to, for example, nickel-cadmium, silver-zinc, nickeliron or lead-acid cells. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 677,770.
