In order to prevent reversal of the polarity of a sealed alkaline accumulator and generation of hydrogen at the positive electrodes due to excessive discharge, the capacity of the positive electrodes is greater than that of the negative electrodes, the electrodes being separated by members pervious to liquid but impervious to gas bubbles. Prior to sealing, the positive electrodes are arranged to have a greater charge than the negative electrodes.
