Abstract
The invention comprises a compound having the formula <FORM:0814879/IV (b)/1> wherein R is a carboxylic acid group, preferably having 1-10 carbon atoms or an hydrogen atom, and the preparation thereof by reacting D 4 - 9 - bromopregnene - 11b ,14a ,17a ,21 - tetrol-3,10-dione 21 - alkanoate with a dehydrobrominating agent and if required hydrolysing the 21-ester to obtain the free alcohol. As dehydrobrominating agents there may be used alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts of organic acids, e.g. potassium acetate, potassium propionate, and potassium formate, tertiary amines, and a mixture comprising an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid and an organic acid, e.g. a mixture of potassium acetate and acetic acid. The reaction may be effected in an alkanol, e.g. ethanol. Hydrolysis of the 21-ester may be effected with a mild alkaline agent, e.g. potassium bicarbonate, in the presence of a small amount of water. An example describes the preparation of D 4-9-bromopregnene - 11b ,14a ,17a ,21 - tetrol - 3,20-dione - 21 - acetate. Specifications 769,998, 770,000, 814,878 and 814,880 are referred to.
