Abstract

The invention comprises 11-keto-testosterones and esters thereof of the general formula <FORM:0738629/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or the acyl residue of a fatty acid having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or benzoic acid, and the preparation thereof by oxidizing a D 4-androstene-3-one-11b ,17b -diol-17-ester in acidic chromic acid solution and, if desired, hydrolysing the 11-keto-testosterone ester thus formed with aqueous alkali to yield 11-keto-testosterone. The oxidation may be carried out in the presence of glacial acetic acid, a suitable temperature for the oxidation being 10 DEG to 100 DEG C. The aqueous alkali may be an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate. In the examples: D 4 - androstene - 17b - ol - 3,11 - dione and the 17b - ol - acetate thereof are prepared. Specification 737,773 is referred to.
