813,370. Shaft seals. WEISS, F. Nov. 27, 1957 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 37039/57. Class 122 (5). A shaft-sealing ring of rubber or the like comprises an inner sealing lip portion 3 integral with an outer portion 1 that is reinforced by a V-section ring 5, preferably of sheet steel, embedded therein so that when the outer portion is axially compressed during assembly of the ring the angle of the V-section is reduced to thereby increase the outer diameter of the sealing ring and urge it into contact with the shaft housing bore 8. A V-section groove 6 is provided in the outer periphery of the sealing ring and the lip portion 3 is urged against the shaft 7 by a garter spring 4 and connected to the outer portion by a bellows-like portion 2.
