Abstract

813,327. Valves. FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO. Dec. 14, 1956, No. 38209/56. Class 135. A valve stem construction for tubeless pneumatic tyre rims comprises a rubber body 16 projecting through a rim valve hole 17 and having a longitudinal air passage 14, a rigid ring 21 larger than the hole attached to the body and abutting the edge of the hole radially outward of the ring, an annular groove 22 opening from one end of the body and extending about one end of the passage and communicating with the tyre inflationary air when the body is mounted on the rim, the groove extending in depth axially of the body a distance beyond the portions of the body adapted to fit against the sides of the valve holes. The inflationary air acting in the groove seals the rubber body against the edge of the rim valve hole. The passage is formed by a rigid barrel 14 to which the rubber body is bonded. The stem construction is passed through the hole from radially outside the rim until the whole edge snaps into a peripheral recess 11 in an enlarged end of the body. Lateral stability of the stem in the rim is provided by embedding the ring 21 in the body. In a modification the ring 21 and the part 20 of the enlarged end of the rubber body radially outside the rim are given a smaller diameter than that part of the body immediately inside the rim.
