Abstract

725,767. Vehicle wheel rims. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. July 17, 1953 [Feb. 25, 1953], No. 19901/53. Class 144 (2). A divisible rim has an inflation valve 12 sealed thereto and is rendered air-tight for use with tubeless pneumatic tyres by a rubber or like sealing ring engaged in a circumferential recess, groove or cavity bounded by the various sections of the rim to seal the gap or gaps therebetween. Fig. 1 shows a rim 1 having a gutter 16 at one side to receive a split detachable bead-retaining flange 18 which has an axially inwardly extending bead seat portion 19. A rubber sealing ring 22 is disposed in the gutter 16 between the detachable flange portion 19 and the rim base to be engaged by the .tyre bead and compressed thereby to effect a seal between the tyre bead, the rim base 1 and the flange 18. Fig. 2 shows a continuous detachable bead seating and retaining flange 27 held on the rim 1 by a split locking ring 29 engaged in a rim gutter 25, a normally circular section sealing ring 32 being compressed in a circumferential space defined by a stepped portion 26 in the rim and the radially inner surface of the bead sealing portion of the flange 27. Alternative arrangements for positioning the sealing ring between divisible rim sections are described.
