Abstract

A process of heat treating zirconium alloys containing at least 80 per cent zirconium by weight comprises homogenizing the alloy at a temperature above the a-b transformation temperature and ageing at a temperature below the a-b transformation temperature. The homogenizing may be carried out in a vacuum furnace at a temperature above 1000 DEG C and the ageing may be for 300 hours at 600 DEG C. A cold working operation may be performed between homogenizing and ageing. The alloys may be zirconium and a minor proportion (less than 20 per cent) of one or more of molybdenum, niobium, tin, and aluminium, and the following are referred to: zirconium/molybdenum with 7.5 per cent molybdenum; zirconium/niobium with 10.0 per cent niobium; zirconium/tin with 6.7 per cent tin; zirconium/aluminium with 1.5 per cent aluminium.
