In a magazine gramophone each record 1 (see diagrammatic Figs. 4 and 5) is clamped to a separate turntable which is smaller in diameter than the unrecorded centre portion of the record. A number of these assemblies, each mounted for free rotation on a supporting arm 8, are disposed around a circle 17. At the centre of the circle is a unit comprising a motor driving a roller 4 which may be brought into contact with a flange 6 on each turntable and two pickups mounted on a duplex arm 7 which is simultaneously moved to a position for one of the pick-ups to engage the first groove of the record to be played. In the practical construction shown in Fig. 7 the record 46 is clamped to a turntable having a flange 50. The plate 28 can rotate in the bearing 26 relative to the base plate 25 which carries the supporting arms 8. Mounted on the plate 28 is a motor 29 driving a roller 30 and hence the driving plate 35 and the flange 50. A separate motor 44 has a screwed shaft 43 on which runs a nut 42 attached to an arm 38 which passes through a slot in the pickup arm 37. Movement of the nut down the shaft withdraws the pick-up arm from between the records, and the driving plate 35 from engagement with drive roller 30 and the flange 50. A pin 51 co-operates with a projection 51<SP>1</SP> to bring the pick-up arm against the stop 52, which positions the pick-up above the first groove of the next record to be played. The motor 44 is controlled by relays and contacts closed when the pick-up arm reaches the limits of its travel.
