809,138. Transfering designs; transfers. MACKENZIE, F. W. July 30, 1957 [Aug. 7, 1956], No. 24193/56. Class 100(2) Transferring designs. A method of applying designs to showcards and other articles comprises placing a transfer sheet carrying a design with the design in contact with a non-occlusive temporary support, removing the transfer sheet (as by floating off) to leave the design on the support in reverse, applying the support to the article and pressing the design or the article in the required position. The transfer comprises a paper backing sheet, a thin film, and a water-soluble adhesive film, on which letters or other designs are stuck. A piece of the thin film with the desired letter or design is cut and peeled off the backing sheet and applied to the temporary support, the film (or transfer sheet) being floated off. The temtorary support is laid against the artice, the design being slightly spaced from the article by a frame, and the support is pressed to bring the design against the article, to which it adheres. Transfers. The temporary support, which constitutes an intermediate transfer, comprises a screen 10, Figs. 1 and 2, secured between a main frame 11 having a depth of 0.25 to 0.75 inches and a spacing frame 12 having a depth of 0.05 to 0.15 inches. The spacing frame holds the design clear of the article while it is accurately positioned. The screen is of any material which does not occlude air or water from entering between it and the design, e.g. silk, cotton, or other natural fibres, synthetic or metallic filaments, or embossed or perforated metal or synthetic plastic.
