Abstract

1365873 Labelling machine EMI Ltd 28 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 46394/70 Heading B8F A method of applying labels employs a resilient means which progressively presses each label on to an article to prevent air being entapped between the label and the article; the whole of the label on the article being under pressure. In the preferred embodiment labels 2 are removed from a magazine 1 by a suction device and applied by it to articles 5 while heating means activates thermoplastic adhesive label coatings. The device 3 is provided with resilient layer 4, of for example silicone rubber, whose lower surface is spherically or cylindrically convex, which acts to progressively press the label 2 on to the article 5, starting from the centre. A stamper member 6 with abutment 8 can be employed to press any projecting label edge to the side of the article. Alternatively the layer 4 can have a flat under surface-one edge being applied to the article first. For cylindrical articles a curved portion of resilient material can be rolled over the article to apply the label.
