Abstract
1,211,530. Magnetic contact units; liquid contacts. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 June, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 28292/69. Heading H1N. [Also in Division C7A] A liquid contact in which the liquid is retained on a contact surface by capillary action is made of a contact material having a composition by weight of between 46 and 85% gallium, between 15 and 40% indium, between 0 and 25% tin, between 0 end 2% zinc. The liquid contact co-operates with a pin 7 and the contacts are within an airtight envelope (Fig. 1, not shown) of a sealed magnetic reed relay which may be used in any position. The cavity 9 is formed in a member 8 which may be of the same material as the pin 7 preferably molybdenum or tungsten. This material may alternatively be nickel, iron, tantalum, columbium or rhenium and the contact unit may be heated to between 400‹ to 800‹ C. to destroy the oxide film and make the contact surface wetable before the envelope is sealed so that the contacts operate in a vacuum or in a gas such as helium, argon or hydrogen at a pressure of 1 or ¢ atmosphere.
