A socket member 1a on a soil, &c. pipe 1 has an aperture 1d and a tapered annular wall 1b in which fits a correspondingly shaped rubber, &c. ring 3 of greater internal diameter than the aperture 1d and through which a branch pipe 5 may be inserted to bear on a base 1c so that when a pressure applying member 4 is screwed down, the ring 3 is distorted and while gripping the branch pipe 5 throughout its length is enclosed by surrounding parts except for a small clearance between the member 4 and the branch pipe 5. The member 4 is a gland cap having an annular projection 4a which fits into the recess of the socket member 1a and is secured by screws 2 engaging tapped holes therein. The socket can accommodate pipes of the same diameter but different wall thicknesses, the ring 3 being thin for thick-walled pipes and viceversa. Modifications are described in which the socket member is recessed to receive two or more branch pipes and bolts and nuts may be used in place of the screws 2. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates a double apertured socket member formed by a collar having a recess on each side for the reception of in-line pipe ends, rings being fitted as before and secured by gland caps. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates a sealing ring in which the tapered face terminates in a flat end face which rests on the base of the socket member and in Fig. 7 (not shown), the ring is further modified by being provided with two tapered faces, one bearing on the correspondingly tapered face of the socket and the other being engaged by a correspondingly shaped face a of gland cap, Fig. 8 (not shown). The joint may be used for metallic and non- metallic pipes and when secured will permit only a slight aligning movement.
