The blade 1 of a band saw or reciprocating saw is prevented from deviating from an intended straight line, owing to the action of the grain of a log L, by means of a guide 4 which is carried by a lever 6 pivoted at 7 and is adjusted along the blade, so as to be as close as possible to the point where the blade enters the log surface, by means of a feeler or roller 8 which follows the contour of the log surface parallel to the cut. A hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical thrust device 9 exerts a controlled variable pressure of the roller 8 on the log and, in the event of failure of the device 9, a balance weight 11 withdraws the roller from the log.
