Abstract

In the manufacture of a printed circuit the surface of an insulating base of resin bonded fibrous material is mechanically roughened, part or all of the roughened surface is activited by treatment with a solution containing a noble metal salt, the activited surface is treated with a reducing agent which precipitates the noble metal, and the base or part(s) thereof is treated with a hot solution containing a nickel salt, hypophosphite ions and a buffer so that nickel (containing nickel phosphide) is deposited thereon. Specifically, the base is a laminate made from sheets of thin paper impregnated with phenolic thermosetting resin, the roughening is performed by sand-blasting, the activating solution contains palladium chloride and ammonium lauryl sulphate as wetting agent, the reducing agent is hypophosphorous acid, and the nickel plating solution is alkaline or acid and contains sodium citrate. In three procedures described, (1) the parts of the base on which no conductor is desired are masked prior to activation, by printing on a nitrocellulose lacquer, the final nickel deposit itself forming the circuit or acting as a foundation on which a layer of another metal is deposited, e.g. copper electrolytically, or 60:40 lead-tin solder alloy by hot-dipping or electrolytically; (2) only the part of the base on which the conductor is desired is activited by a direct printing process in which a printing ink is used composed of water containing the noble metal salt and a protectve hydrophilic colloid, the final nickel deposit itself forming the circuit or acting as a foundation as in (1); and (3) the base is given a very thin nickel coating, those parts of the plated base on which no conductive layer is required are covered with a resist material, the exposed nickel coating is thickened e.g. by electrodeposition of copper, nickel or silver, or by re-immersion in the nickel-hypophosphite bath, and the resist material together with the thin nickel coating by it are removed from the base, e.g. by immersion in nitric acid or chromic acid.
