Abstract

805,682. Water-gas plant. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW Ltd. Jan. 11, 1957 [Feb. 7, 1956], No. 3874/56. Class 55 (1). In a process for the production of carburetted water gas, the blow phase is carried out in two stages in the first of which air is passed from a compressor 64 simultaneously through an inlet 12 of a generator 10 and an opening 28 of a carburetter 20, the blow gases emerging through outlet 16 and the heated air from the carburetter 20 mixing in a combustion chamber 36 and then passing in a divided stream partly through opening 56 to an air and steam preheater 48 and partly through a gas preheater 32. In the second stage of the blow phase air is passed up through the air and steam preheater 48, part of the pre-heated air then passing to the generator 10 through inlet 12 and part passing to the combustion chamber 36 to mix with the blow gases passing through outlet 16, the mixture being then divided so that one part flows through the carburetter 20 to reheat it and the other part passes through the gas preheater 32. The gases leaving the apparatus during both stages of the blow phase are passed through a waste heat boiler 58. After the blow phase, steam is fed from boiler 58 through inlet 50, up through the air and steam preheater 48 into the generator 10 at 12. The resulting blue water gas is passed from the outlet 16 down through both the gas preheater 32 and the carburetter 20 to purge them. In the make phase, the blue water gas passes up through the coal carbonization chamber 11, and the gas mixture leaving through the outlet 18 is passed up through the gas preheater 32 and down through the carburetter 20 into which oil is sprayed at 30. The carburetted gas is passed through wash-box 62. After the make phase steam is passed up through the air and steam preheater 48, and then down through the gas preheater 32 and the carburetter 20 to purge them. During all phases of the cycle other than the make phase, coal gas evolved in carbonization chamber 11 is passed through outlet 18 and wash-box 60 to treatment and storage.
