Abstract

802,220. Centrifugal separators. FIAT SOC PER AZIONI. Feb.13, 1957 [June 5, 1956; Oct. 31, 1956], No. 4933/57. Class 23 [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXIV] An internal combustion engine lubricating system comprises a centrifugal filter 42, mounted on the end of an extension 39a of the crank - shaft 39, to which oil is supplied from a gear pump 38 having a collar 38a mounted on the crank-shaft extension 39a. The pump 38 comprises gears 45, 46 which are driven from the crank-shaft extension through gears 48, 49. Rotation of the pump body with respect to the crank-case is prevented by a dowel 57. Oil from the pump flows into an annular channel 38c in the collar 38a from which it flows through radial ducts 39c in the crankshaft extension 39a, through an annular channel formed between a bore 40 in the extension 39c and a tubular member 41, and outwardly through radial ducts 39d to the filter 42. On leaving the filter 42, the oil passes through the tubular member 41 to passages 39e in the crank-shaft 39. The filter 42 consists of a pan-shaped body, keyed to the shaft extension 39a, provided with vanes 42a and a cover 43. A sheet metal diaphragm 34 divides the inlet and outlet portions. The pump has a pressure relief valve 50. In another embodiment, shown in Fig. 4, the construction of the filter is modified slightly and the pump dowel is prismatically shaped.
