Abstract

<PICT:0801708/IV (b)/1> A process for the thermal cracking of liquid hydrocarbons in the liquid phase comprises allowing a flame to burn beneath the surface of the liquid by supplying to a burner below the surface, oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen and a fuel, the oxygen being present in a smaller quantity stoichiometrically than the combustion of the fuel to water and carbon dioxide. In an example, a diesel oil of boiling range 200-325 DEG C. was cracked in an iron container 1 which is surrounded by a cooling jacket 6 through which water flows. A gauge 7 enables the oil level height to be controlled. A vertically arranged burner dips into the oil from the top and consists of a mixing chamber 4, supply pipes for oxygen 2, and a gaseous fuel 3, such as methane, and a burner pipe 5. The oil is maintained at 110 DEG C. The cracked gases are led through a pipe 8 to an indirect cooler 9 in which they are cooled to 20 DEG C. Water settles out in tank 10 and is withdrawn through valve 12, the oil returning to the plant via a pipe 11. Oil contaminated with soot is withdrawn through a pipe 14, filtered and returned through a pipe 15. The gaseous product consists chiefly of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and acetylene together with some methane. Specification 795,688 is referred
