Abstract
1333979 Purifying fuel gas TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 Aug 1971 36668/71 Heading C5E A gas containing H 2 and CO made by the partial combustion of liquid hydrocarbons with O 2 and steam at a temperature in the range 1800 to 3200 F. is purified of entrained carbon by cooling the gas to a temperature above the dew point of contained water vapour, e.g. by indirect heat exchange at 32, and contacting the cooled gas with a liquid hydrocarbon at a temperature above the dew point of water vapour in the gas, e.g. in a Venturi 39 or nozzle or plate orifice. The gas may be scrubbed with water in a similar contactor 62 to remove oil and residual carbon. The water scrubbing step may be performed at a temperature 50 F. below that of the oil contacting step, and may be in the range 100 to 500 F., and both steps may be carried out at the same pressure. The same hydrocarbon 45 may be used for purification and gasmaking, and circuits for recycling oil and carbon slurry to the gas generator 9 and to the Venturi 39, and for delivering water, oil and carbon to steam supply 77 through a heater 76 are illustrated in the Figure.
