A lathe or lathe-attachment for taper-turning comprises means attachable to the saddle 4 for driving the feed-screw (not shown), of the crossslide 5 from a pinion 12 engaging the rack 9 provided on the lathe-bed for traversing the saddle, the cross-slide thus being fed by the rotating pinion as the saddle is traversed along the rack. The saddle may be traversed by a hand wheel 10 or by a feed-shaft 7 driving the pinion 12 or another pinion. The pinion-shaft 15 is splined to a sliding-gear 17 in the casing 11 of the attachment, the gear being moved into engagement with a gear 22, for taper-turning, by a fork 19 on a shaft 20 provided at one end with an operating-handle 21 and at the other with a lever 28 interlocking with a controllever 8 to prevent the latter from engaging the direct feed from the feed-shaft to the cross-slide while the gears 17, 22 are in mesh. A shaft 23, supporting the gear 22 and a hand wheel 24, drives the cross-slide feed-screw, or a shaft connected to the screw, through a gear 25 in mesh with a gear on the screw or shaft. Changegear-wheels may be included to vary the angle of taper. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of intermediate gears between the gears 17, 22 and a tumbler-gear if both internal and external tapers are to be turned.
