Abstract

800,420. Casting composite nuclear-reactor fuel elements, DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. Dec. 6, 1956 [Dec. 6, 1955], No. 37373/56. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XL (a)] A fuel-element for a nuclear rector comprising an element of the fissionable material, e.g. uranium, and a metal casing tube, is made by placing the element of fissionable material 11 into a casing tube 12 which is longer than the element and closed at one end 13, closing the other end of the tube except for a narrow passage 16, evacuating the casing tube, forcing magnesium or an alloy with a high magnesium content, which has been melted in a protective gas atmosphere, into said tube by pressure of inert gas to fill the space between the element 11 and the inside wall of the tube 12, and thereafter completely sealing off the casing tube. The narrow passage 16 holds back oxide or nitride skins forming on the molten magnesium. The steel casing is cleaned internally, as by electrolytic degreasing, etched with nitric acid, rinsed, and dried. The uranimn rod 11 is anodically polished in an alcoholic phosphoric-acid bath containing glycerine, etched in nitric acid and dried. The casing may be of zirconium, beryllium or alloys thereof, or aluminium alloy.
