Abstract

In a method of forming, on a solid metal body consisting of iron, nickel or cobalt or an alloy of one or more of these metals, a superficial alloy consisting of the metal of the body with an p additional metal consisting of chromium with or without aluminium, zirconium or silicon, wherein a source of vapours of the fluoride of the additional metal is heated in the same chamber as the body so that said vapours are brought, as they are formed, into contact with the body, the source is constituted by two separate parts, namely by a mass of additional metal close to, but out of contact with, the body, and by hydrofluoric acid and/or ammonium fluoride, not admixed with chromium, also out of contact with the body, the vapours produced from the hydrofluoric acid and/or ammonium fluoride when the latter is or are heated attacking the mass of additional metal to form the additional metal fluoride vapours to be brought into contact with the body. A metallic network closely conforming to the shape of the body may be used to separate the mass of additional metal from the body.
