Abstract

An alloy of aluminium with plutonium, uranium or thorium, for use as nuclear reactor fuel rods, is made by mixing a halide salt of plutonium, uranium or thorium with excess aluminium and heating the mixture in vacuo above the melting point of aluminium to bring about the reduction of the halide and alloying of the metal produced with the excess aluminium, the aluminium halide formed being removed by distillation. In the reduction of the halides PuF3, PuF4, UF4 or ThF4 the amount of aluminium used is in excess of one atomic proportion of aluminium to each atomic proportion of combined fluorine in the salt. Reference is made to the production of alloys containing 1-80 per cent Pu, e.g. 20 per cent Pu, or 23 per cent U or 88.3 per cent Th.ALSO:An alloy of aluminium with plutonium, uranium or thorium is made by mixing a halide salt of plutonium, uranium or thorium with excess aluminium and heating the mixture in vacuo above the melting point of aluminium to bring about reduction of the halide and alloying of the metal produced with the excess aluminium, the aluminium halide formed being removed by distillation.
