Class 7(5) A clutch member 11 movable axially into engagement with a co-operating, member on the drive shaft 9 of an I.C. or other engine is carried by an axially - slidable shaft 8 supported in a sleeve 5 rigid with a pinion 4 which is axially stationary and is rotated by a smaller pinion 3 on the shaft of a starter motor 1. Displacement of the shaft 8 is effected by means of a diametrical pin 18 which is held in position in the shaft by a set screw 18a and rides in helical slots in the sleeve; a multi-start screw thread may be used instead of a pin-and-slot device. As shown, a claw 12 engages a pin 13 on the shaft 9, and an inclined surface 16 causes retraction of the member 11 when the engine starts up.. The end of the shaft 9 enters a recess 15 in the member 11, and a brake pad 19 prevents rotation of the member until it is engaged. The clutch may be of the plate or cone type. To allow clutch engagement if the claw is directly opposite to the pin, the latter may be spring mounted so as to move axially, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the claw and pin may be replaced by toothed member, Fig. 4 (not shown), and to cushion the impact of the clutch engagement, the pinion 4 may drive the sleeve 5 through springs 34, Fig. 5, mounted in pockets 35 between teeth 36, 37 on the pinion and sleeve respectively.
