Abstract

206,893. Pyrah, H. A. July 18, 1922. Turning-gear.-A starting-handle 1, which is disconnected if the engine turns backwards, has a boss 1<a> secured to the end of the clutch shaft 2 and provided with sliding pawls 4 held by springs 5 in engagement with ratchet teeth 7 on the end face of a sleeve 6 within an extension 1<b> of the boss 1<a>. Studs 8 on the sleeve 6 engage inclined slots 11 in a fixed sleeve 10. If the engine starts backwards, the sleeve 6 is rotated by the pawls 4 and is moved axially by the studs 8 and slots 11, disengaging the clutch 3 from the engine shaft.
