Abstract

A drossing flux for use in the melting of aluminium, magnesium, and alloys thereof, comprises a fluoride and aluminium of particle size minus 200 mesh, the ingredients of the flux not being of themselves exothermically reactive with one another. The fluoride may be an alkali metal fluoride, calcium fluoride, sodium or potassium aluminium fluoride, sodium or potassium borofluoride, or an alkali metal silicofluoride. Other salts may also be present in the flux, e.g. sodium or potassium sulphate or chloride. By way of example is disclosed a flux consisting of:- Aluminium powder (minus 300 mesh) 3 per cent; Cryolite 12 per cent; Sodium silicofluoride 23 per cent; Sodium chloride 31 per cent; Sodium sulphate 31 per cent.
