797,093. Electrolytic preparation of metal alkyls. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. June 25, 1956 [Aug. 30, 1955], No. 24828/55 Class 41. An alkyl derivative of a first metal in Groups IA, IIA, III or IVB (including boron and silicon) is produced by electrolyzing, while excluding water vapour and oxidizing gases as by providing an atmosphere of dry nitrogen, argon, or hydrogen, an electrolyte comprising an alkyl derivative of a second metal of the said Groups in liquid phase, using the first metal as anode, allowing the second metal to deposit at the cathode, and collecting the alkyl derivative of the first metal produced at the anode. The electrolyte may also contain a minor proportion of an alkali metal halide or an alkaline earth halide, an alkyl halogen-derivative of the second metal or an alkyl halide with or without the same halogen compound (halide) of a Group III or IV metal. Preferably an applied voltage of not more than 1.5 volts is used, the anode current density is greater than the cathode current density and the temperature is maintained from 2 to 10 F. above the freezing point of the electrolyte, but not above 250 F. The electrolyte is agitated by means of ultrasonics and is circulated to ensure movement from anode to cathode. The electrolyzing current may be unidirectional with an A.C. ripple.
