A sliding stop-valve consists of an opentopped cylindrical closure member 1 of elastic material adapted to be pressed by a member 2 on a spindle 3 into contact with a depression 5 to close the passage through the valve. Springs 8, 9 reacting between a bush 7 and a plate 10 stretch the closure member axially to contract it radially until, in closing the valve, the end of the closure member engages the recess 5 whereupon the springs are compressed and the closure member expands radially to close the passage.
