Abstract

795,456. Flaw detecting. SWITZER BROS., Inc. Dec. 9, 1955 [Sept. 21, 1955], No. 35438/55. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XL (a)] A penetrant composition for locating flaws in test bodies comprises a flaw penetrating water-immiscible liquid vehicle and a plurality of fluorescent dyes one of which has an emission peak in the visible light range and one or more of the others has an emission peak or peaks lying in the range of maximum absorption of light of the first dyes. The second dye or other dyes should be substantially non-absorptive and reflective in the emission ranges of the first dye or other dyes. This cascading relationship is obtained with such dyes as Rhodamines and Cumarins, specific examples being 4 N, butylamino 1, 8 naphthal N-butylimide, 4 methyl-7 diethyl amino-cumarin, Rhodamine base or extra and Rhodamine 6 GDN: in twin or triplet relationship. In self-emulsifying penetrants the vehicle may be kerosene and sorbitan oleates; in post emulsifying penetrants, dibutyl phthalate and xylol. The fluorescent penetrants are applied to the test bodies by coating or immersion, the bodies being wiped and the cracks viewed by light rich in ultra violet, but deficient in green and longer wavelengths. The liquid may include an agent rendering the penetrant self-emulsifying so that it can be removed from the test body by washing; or an emulsifying agent is applied after the penetrant so that it penetrates to the depth of the filament allows the excess to be washed from the test body. The methods are applicable to flaws in metal, plastic, glass and porcelain. Specifications 642,402, [Group XL (a)], and 763,885 are referred to.
