Abstract

1,178,049. Testing for flaws or cracks. DAY-GLO COLOR CORP. July 11, 1967, No. 31913/67. Heading G1S. A method of detecting surface flaws in a test body comprises the steps of applying to the surface of the body a coating of an oil-in-water emulsion containing a dye soluble or dispersable in the oil, evaporating water from the emulsion until the emulsion breaks and the residual composition remains in a continuous film, removing the residual composition from the test body, and inspecting the test body for flaws indicated by the composition. In one example the emulsifier comprises mixed Tritors, the oil is kerosene and the dye is MDAC and fluoral; in a modification water is added. In Example 2 the dye is Calco Oil Red BNC, and in Example 3 anionic emulsifier and coupling agents are used. In a coated experiment, a post emulsificating penetrant according to Specification 763,885 is used with cascading fluorescent dyes.
